Challoner House is a renovation project, converting and extending a locally listed building into high quality office space for an owner occupier, using natural and recycled materials.

This project within Edinburgh’s Grange Conservation Area was the site of two Victorian homes which had been combined as part of an NHS asset. The proposals reinstated, repaired and extended the properties to create two family homes.

Their compact size is intended to minimise the day-to-day impact on the mature, characterful woodland while considerately sharing its natural beauty with more visitors. The dispersed positions of each cabin, carefully positioned within the site’s sloping topography, ensures they are not visible from another, or wider parts of the farm.

A landscape led development for 6 new homes in a green belt village near Welwyn Garden City. The existing trees and foliage strongly define the site’s character. The design maintained and developed this with well-considered landscaping plans.

Inspired by Scandinavian sauna culture, the Drying Shed Sauna provides a meditative experience for guests staying in several eco-cabins on the same site.

The interior is clad with alder panelling to match the alder trees that surround it - blurring the lines between inside and out. The sauna bench within was constructed by hand from a silver birch tree trunk, creating a natural and organic form to counter the geometries form of the sauna.

This was a sustantial proposal initally across two existing listed New Town houses. A unification of a third adjacent property was also proposed within a next phase of development.

The main proposal includes of a 5 storey addition to create more contemporary hotel accommodation. The new masonry, zinc topped, addition aims to be distinct from surrounding stone architecture and is offset by a glazed link from the listed townhouses.
